The history of Tamatsukuri Onsen and our ryokan

Tamatsukuri onsen is one of the oldest hot springs in Japan, which is already mentioned in “Izumo no kuni Fudoki”, one of the oldest Japanese manuscripts published in 713. In this document, it is said that “Once you have a bath in Tamatsukuri Onsen, you will look beautiful immediately. If you bathe several times, you will recover from any kind of illness. Until now, it has worked for everyone. Local people call it the hot spring of gods”.
Tamatsukuri Onsen was introduced in “Makura no Soshi” (the Pillow Book) written by Sei Shonagon in the end of 10th century as one of the 3 principal hot springs in Japan. It shows that Tamatsukuri Onsen had already a reputation in the ancient capital of Japan.

Known as the Three Sacred Treasures of Japan, “Magatama jewel, Yata mirror, and Kusanagi sword”, has always been very important to Japanese people. Tamatsukuri town has been famous for its production of Magatama jewels since ancient era thanks to abundant agate deposit. This region is also well-known because of the beautiful landscape and well-preserved nature. These fantastic aspects make Tamatsukuri Onsen unique and wonderful hot spring town.

In the Edo period, Tamatsukuri Onsen was a resort place for the Governor of Matsue. The hot spring was protected by the director called “Yunosuke”, this position was created by the Governor of Matsue. This post was hereditary and one of the heir is the chairman of Tamatsukuri Grand Hotel Choseikaku.
Established in 1803 as a tofu shop and running an inn at the same time, Choseikaku has been one of the oldest ryokan of Tamatsukuri town.

The hot spring baths of Tamatsukuri Grand Hotel Choseikaku

Shinwa-no-yu baths (1st floor)

Agate plated bath, Rotenburo(exterior bath), Jacuzzi
The inspiration of these baths is the Japanese mythology of three sacred treasures and the story of God SUSANOO against eight-headed dragon.
The metal bar in the middle of the agate bath is the image of the Kusanagi sword that the God SUSANOO has found in the tail of the dragon after the battle.
The agate plated bath reminds you of the Magatama jewel, one of the three sacred treasures, as Tamatsukuri is an important area for the Magatama jewel making (”Tama” means “jewel” in the old Japanese, “Tsukuri” means “making” or “producing”). The wall just before the exit to the exterior bath is an image of the mirror of the three sacred treasures.

Megami-no-yu baths (ground floor)

Rock bath, Agath plated bath, Rotenburo(exterior bath), Sauna
These baths are inspired by the Japanese mythology of Goddess Amaterasu Oomikami. This goddess of the sun has once hidden in a cave and darkened the world. When she came back, she brought the light to the world. The agate plated bath situated far end of the Megami-no-yu represents the cave of the Goddess Amaterasu Oomikami when she comes out with the ray of sunshine. This gorgeous agate plated baths are very rare in Japan.
Rotenburo (exterior baths) are surrounded by rocks and trees. This wild atmospher brings you back to the Japanese mythological era.
